Founded in 1984, the Sabah Art Gallery lacked a permanent home for over two decades, often sharing space with the State Museum. In 2012, the gallery finally established its own building, the Sabah Art Gallery Conservation Centre, on Mile 2, Jalan Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, fulfilling the dream of its founder, the late Datuk Mohd. Yaman Hj. Ahmad Mus.
Inspired by geometric shapes, the gallery’s octagonal design creates a user-friendly space. Its distinctive outward-tapering walls and reinforced concrete structure house four levels. The first two focus on art conservation, while the upper levels feature exhibition spaces, offices, and a library. Traditional Sabahan motifs add a cultural touch to the building.
Awarded a Silver classification from the Green Building Index in 2012, the Sabah Art Gallery Conservation Centre is Sabah’s first recognized Green building and Malaysia's first Green public gallery. It features solar panels, passive design, rainwater harvesting, and sensor lights, making it a sustainable and attractive destination for art lovers and tourists.
